People spend millions dollars a year on dietary supplements such as fish oil capsules, vitamin tablets or ginseng extract. Very few people suffer from nutrient deficiency. The pills are therefore only useful in certain cases. One in three people in the country fear not to consume enough vitamins. Is this concern justified and can dietary supplements prevent a deficiency?
Right Supplements Required
This country is not a vitamin manganese country. Admittedly, the myth persists that our soils are depleted of nutrients and therefore foods do not contain as many vitamins as they used to. In fact, however, the opposite is the case, because so much fertilizer is used in agriculture, the nutritional value in the food has even increased. Vitamin deficiency and related diseases are consequently rare. This means in most cases, pterostilbene supplement are simply superfluous.
The other way around
A one-sided diet cannot be compensated by taking tablets or degrees. And those who think that they cannot go wrong with the consumption of synthetic vitamins are wrong: the often too high-dosed remedies can certainly cause health problems. In case of overdose, symptoms of intoxication are imminent. Nevertheless, a huge variety of dietary supplements are available in stores that promise shiny hair, more ability to focus or strong defenses.
What is to be held?
It is advisable to be skeptical of such promises. Dietary supplements are not drugs. They do not require authorization because they are covered by the Food Law. Also, no proof of their effectiveness is required. The coenzyme Q10, for example, is a bestseller among the preparations: it is supposed to make the skin firmer, the heart healthier and the nerves stronger.
The Right Source
Still, a varied diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains is the best way to provide the body with vitamins and minerals. Synthetic vitamins cannot achieve the same positive effects as vitamins as part of the natural diet – they lack the interaction with other nutrients. As a rule of thumb, at least three servings of vegetables or salad should come on the table during the day.
However, the vitamins are lost in the fresh food gradually; in addition, they do not tolerate heat, oxygen and water well. It is therefore advisable to store carrot and cool and dark and consume as quickly as possible. In which groups of people is the danger of a nutrient deficiency especially high? And when can it be necessary to take additional vitamins and trace elements?
For Pregnant Women
You should definitely take folic acid – this reduces the risk that the baby is born with spina bifida, the so-called open back. It is best to take an additional preparation as soon as you have a baby. Even older people should pay attention to the vitamin supply. Vitamin D, for example, which is important for healthy bones, the body can produce itself – but only under the influence of sunlight. People who are no longer fit and rarely outdoors are therefore likely to be low on vitamin D. In addition, over-65s often have less appetite than young people.
However, less food carries the risk that important nutrients such as proteins, minerals and vitamins are no longer absorbed in sufficient quantities, although seniors need them in the same amount as younger people. The use of the pterostilbene supplement happens to be essential there.
