According to studies, most of drug users are employed and due to this reason, majority of companies are forced to spend millions of dollars conducting various drug tests to ensure that their employees are clean.
There are various types of drug tests which employers use such as blood test, urine test, hair test and the now popular mouth swab or saliva test. While urine test was the most common method used due to its efficiency, most companies now rely on the latest saliva test due to its affordability and simplicity.
What’s a mouth swab drug test?
A mouth swab drug test is conducted by screening samples of your saliva for any residual amounts of drugs. This kind of drug test is mostly done by employers in large companies. In most cases, it helps in detecting presence of THC (TetraHydroCannabinol which is a component of marijuana), cocaine, alcohol, amphetamines and opiates.
How does it work?
Performing a saliva test is extremely easy and cheap as compared to other methods. Saliva is a refined version of plasma and contains traces of recently consumes foods and substances. If a swab drug test is conducted on time (especially not later than 36 hours), chances are that a positive result will be obtained as compared to urine test, where you have to wait for longer time before the drugs are metabolized and released into urine.
What happens when performing an oral test is that a cotton swab is scrubbed on certain areas of your mouth such as between the gums, under the tongue and lower parts of the cheeks for approximately two to three minutes. When enough samples are collected, the swab is taken to the laboratory for screening. This method usually takes approximately 10 minutes and due to the advancement in technology, modern test kits are now capable of interpreting the results instantly.
How to pass the test
For those of you working in large companies that perform random drug tests, you always need to be prepared to avoid being found at an off guard scenario. Here are some simple steps you need to follow to pass the saliva test.
Don’t take drugs before you’re tested
If you’re aware of an upcoming oral swab test, the safest way to pass it is through avoiding the use of drugs a week or so prior to the test. The reason for this is that by the time a week is over, drug contents will have been metabolized and naturally removed from the body.
Eat fatty foods
Another way of preparing is eating lots of fatty foods. Since THC is known to be fat soluble, eating meals with lots of fats will help pull out any traces of THC from your saliva leaving you clean and ready. To make sure that you’re on the safe side, consume fatty foods at list an hour prior to the test.
Flush it out
Another way of passing a saliva test is through drinking plenty of water or using a detox mouthwash. To make this tip even more successful, try maintaining a thorough oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice or thrice a day. Remember to pay attention to those hotspot areas of your mouth such as the tongue, the cheeks and the gums.
Try to detox the saliva
Another successful way of passing a forthcoming swab drug test is through neutralizing your saliva with either an Oral Clear chewing gum or an Ultra Klean Saliva Mouthwash. If you’re using an Oral Clear chewing gum, simply unwrap the gum and chew it for about 30 seconds. The gum contains hydrogen peroxide which when swished around the mouth will neutralize the saliva leaving you clean and free from any drug substances.
Buy a home kit oral drug test
Finally, consider purchasing a home drug test kit to use prior to the official drug testing day. With such a kit at the disposal, you’ll be able to apply any of the above methods while testing yourself to see whether you’re 100% negative and free from any drug substances.
What if the oral drug test fails?
Okay, sometimes the odds might be against you and the test might record a positive result. In such a scenario, you don’t have to be aggressive or angry to the person conducting the test. Rather, you should claim your innocence or act in a confused or surprised manner. Explain about various over-the-counter drugs, prescription medications or vitamins you might have taken and insist on alternative test methods such as urine or hair test. Although some companies may take strict or legal steps against you, others might consider your appeal and allow for alternative test methods which in return might give you time to prepare.
